Not all pellets are of the same quality. How to choose the right ones?

Pellets differ with regard to their technical characteristics, which are reflected in their quality, efficiency, and the amount of ash produced.

When it comes to purchasing pellets, customers often look for the lowest price while forgetting the quality of the product. However, this can present a dangerous mistake. This is especially true for those pellets that are not subjected to external quality control checks, and whose producers do not have the appropriate certificates.

There are many different wood pellets available on the market, which users can quickly and easily compare, and the easiest way to do that is by checking the quality certificates awarded by accredited institutions. These include the Slovenian S4Q quality certificate and the international ENplus certificate. Based on the measured properties of pellets, the certificates divide them into different grades and certify them accordingly.

A pellet heating system is a modern combustion plant that only reaches its full capability and faultless operation with the use of quality pellets.

Compared to fuel oil, consumers have the opportunity to compare, at least in broad terms, the technical characteristics of pellets with one another. The technical specifications are usually indicated on the product packaging and include information with regard to the:

  • Raw material,
  • Calorific value,
  • Density,
  • Water content,
  • Ash content,
  • Strength of pellets,
  • Diameter,
  • Origin.

High-quality pellets have several advantages for users, resulting in higher energy efficiency, less waste (ass and slagging) and a longer boiler lifetime.

Here it should be noted that it is not only the pellets that affect the efficiency and energy performance, but also the settings and regular maintenance of the related heating apparatus.
